You are a black hole.

You drift. Everything near you falls in. Dust first, then rocks, ships, moons, worlds, stars, galaxies. You are always evaporating, so you are always hungry: stop eating and you are gone.

The field never ends and it never stops growing with you. What was a meal a minute ago is grit now. Twelve ranks stand between a speck and the last one, and the last one changes the rules.

Other holes are out there. Smaller ones are dinner. Bigger ones are hunting you, and their rings have teeth so you can tell at a glance. Skim one closely and break away and you come out of the well

faster than you went in, with points for the nerve. Get caught and you have less than a second to pull free.

Fill the bar and right click. For six seconds you turn white: nothing can eat you and you eat anything, other holes included. The whole screen flips with you, and so does the music, minor to major on the beat.

Watch the ring with a cross in it. That is a star about to blow. If you are inside the ring when the cross fills, you lose a third of yourself.

There is one more turn past the last rank. It is better found than described.

CONTROLS

Mouse: move

Hold click: pull harder. It costs mass and bar, so it is a decision, not a habit

Right click: white hole, once the bar is full

P: pause

H: how to play, from anywhere

O: options

ONLINE BOARD

Your run is recorded input by input and sent to a service that replays it from the same simulation the game runs. The score on the board is the score the replay produced, not the number your browser

claimed. Press N to put a name on it. It is optional and the game is complete offline.

MADE FROM SCRATCH

Everything here is homemade:

Engine: my own, written in C++ from the renderer up. No game engine underneath.

Art: every sprite drawn pixel by pixel in my own tool, ordered into two colours with a Bayer matrix.

One texel to one game pixel at every zoom.

Music: written for this game in D minor, with a D major version of the same tune degree for degree so the white hole can cross between them on any beat. Nine layers that fade in and out with how the run is going, plus a title loop and a death sting.

Sound: every effect synthesised from scratch, mixed against a measured budget so a busy run never turns into a wall of noise.

Leaderboard: my own service, with the game's own simulation compiled to WebAssembly as the referee.

Made for 1-BIT JAM 14, theme Blackhole. Two colours, no exceptions: #0B0A12 and #ECE7D8.
